A Day in Pilsen + Garfield Park Conservatory: Coffee, Culture, and Finding Beauty in the City 🌷
A Day to Get Out and See Something Different
I’ll be honest—I hadn’t even heard of Pilsen before this. But last weekend, I ventured and loved seeing all the culture!
I asked ChatGPT for a few ideas on where to go in or near Chicago that felt a little different, and Pilsen came up. What caught my attention was the Mexican and Hispanic culture, and the idea of trying Mexican coffee, Cafe de Olla, at La Malinche Cafe, and finding a really authentic place to eat.
So I went—and I’m really glad I did.
The Color Stands Out Right Away
The first thing you notice is the color.
It’s everywhere—murals, buildings, even smaller details you wouldn’t expect. Some of it is bold and bright, some of it more worn down, but all of it feels real. I ventured 18th and 16th street but I know I missed many of the murals still.
Nothing about it feels overly polished or designed for tourists.
It feels like a neighborhood people actually live in.
It’s Not Perfect—and That’s What Makes It Interesting
Parts of Pilsen are a little run down.
You see older buildings, areas that haven’t been updated, and just a lot of wear overall.
But it doesn’t take away from it—it actually adds to it.
It feels honest. Not cleaned up or trying to be something else.
The People Were What Stood Out Most
What surprised me the most was how nice everyone was.
People would make eye contact, smile, say hi as I was walking around with my camera.
It felt welcoming.
And honestly, that’s what I’ll remember the most from being there.
Coffee + Lunch in the Middle of It All
I stopped for Mexican coffee at Malinche first and tried their Cafe de Olla, and later grabbed lunch at 5Rubanitos.
Both were simple and exactly what I was hoping for—nothing fancy, just good and authentic.
It all felt like part of being in that neighborhood, not just stopping somewhere random.
Taking It All In
I spent a few hours just walking around and taking photos.
Not rushing. Just moving through it and noticing what stood out.
It’s the kind of place where you don’t need a big plan—you just walk and see what you find.
Next Stop: A Completely Different Feel
After Pilsen, I headed over to the Garfield Park Conservatory—and this ended up being my favorite part of the day.
I’ve realized how much I love being in gardens like this.
The second you walk in, it feels warm. Not just temperature-wise, but the whole environment. Green everywhere, plants layered on top of each other, and just a completely different pace than being out in the city.
Why I’m Drawn to Spaces Like This
There’s something about being surrounded by this much life.
Everything feels full—lush, dense, colorful, but still calming at the same time.
It’s quiet in a way that makes you slow down without even trying.
And after walking around the city, it felt like exactly what I needed.
One of My Favorite Places to Photograph
This kind of space is one of my favorite places to shoot.
The light coming through the glass ceilings, the different shades of green, the structure of the plants—it all works together.
It’s completely different than street photography.
Softer. More organic. Less busy.
I found myself taking my time more here, not rushing from one shot to the next.
A Place I’ll Keep Coming Back To
This visit reminded me how much I want to explore more gardens like this.
There’s something about stepping into a space that feels alive year-round, especially when everything outside is still catching up.
It’s a different kind of reset.
Ending the Day on the Right Note
Ending the day here felt right.
From the color and energy of Pilsen to the calm and warmth inside the conservatory—it balanced out the whole experience.
Ending the Day on the Right Note
On my way home, I stopped in Joliet and wandered a little to break up the drive. That is a simple cute little city. I actually wouldn’t mind going back and exploring it a little more.
A Day That Balanced Itself Out
What stood out most about this day was the contrast.
Pilsen felt full of energy—color, culture, movement, and a neighborhood that feels lived in and real.
Then the Garfield Park Conservatory shifted everything.
Quiet. Warm. Slower.
Both places offered something completely different, and putting them together in one day made each one stand out even more.
Why I’ll Keep Exploring Like This
This kind of day reminded me how much there is to experience close to home.
Not big trips.
Not over-planned schedules.
Just picking a place, showing up, and seeing what you notice.
And for me, it also reinforced something I already know—I’m always going to be drawn to spaces like gardens.
Places that feel alive, calm, and a little removed from everything else.
What I’m Taking With Me
I’ll remember the color of Pilsen.
The people who said hello.
And the feeling of walking into the conservatory and immediately slowing down.
That balance made the whole day.
And it’s something I want more of.
