Photographing St. Mary’s Cathedral and Luthy Botanical Garden: A Photography Day in Peoria, Illinois ⛪️ 🪴

Saturday I decided to take a little drive up to Peoria with my camera and spend the afternoon exploring.

Sometimes the best photography days happen when there isn’t a strict plan — just a few places you want to see and time to wander and notice things along the way.

Peoria ended up being a great spot for that.

St. Mary’s Cathedral

One of the main places I wanted to visit was St. Mary’s Cathedral, and it was even more impressive in person.

The exterior alone is beautiful. Tall limestone walls, two large spires, and classic cathedral architecture that immediately catches your eye. I spent some time photographing the doors and the details around the entrance — the gold accents on the doors are especially striking.

But the real surprise was stepping inside.

The interior of the cathedral is stunning. The deep blue ceiling with gold stars and geometric patterns pulls your eyes upward right away. Everywhere you look there are details — arches, stained glass windows, long rows of pews, and soft light filling the space.

It’s the kind of place that naturally makes you slow down.

As a photographer, it was fun to play with symmetry and perspective in the space — especially looking down the center aisle and photographing the ceiling patterns.

Finding Small Details Around the City

After leaving the cathedral, I spent some time walking around nearby streets looking for interesting buildings and textures.

Old brick walls, worn windows, and architectural details always catch my attention. I love finding those small moments — something simple like two old windows in a weathered brick wall can make a really interesting photograph.

That’s part of the fun of wandering with a camera. You never really know what you’ll notice until you’re there.

Luthy Botanical Garden

Before heading home, I made one more stop at Luthy Botanical Garden.

It’s a smaller garden, but it’s a peaceful place to walk around and look for interesting plants and textures. The greenhouse is always one of my favorite parts because there are so many shapes and colors to photograph.

I spent some time focusing on close-up shots — cactus, succulents, and some early flowers. It’s amazing how much detail you can see when you slow down and look closely.

It’s also one of those places I could see myself coming back to during the colder months. Just stepping inside the greenhouse, feeling the warmth, and being surrounded by plants and greenery is a nice little break from winter. Even if I didn’t bring my camera, it would be a great place to walk through and enjoy a little nature indoors.

A Good Way to Spend the Afternoon

It ended up being a really nice way to spend a few hours.

A beautiful cathedral, some interesting architecture around town, and a quiet walk through a botanical garden. Nothing complicated — just time outside with my camera noticing things I might otherwise walk past.

Those kinds of afternoons always feel well spent.
