Chasing Spring at the Chicago 🌷Botanic Garden
And Turning These Moments Into Cards You Can Keep
There are certain places that remind you every season is worth waiting for, and the Chicago Botanic Garden is one of them.
This weekend I made the drive north with my camera, hoping to catch the first real signs of spring color. It was definitely chilly — the kind of cold that keeps your jacket zipped tight and your hands tucked in between shots — but the sunshine made it worth every second.
And once I saw the tulips, I forgot about the cold completely.
Tulips Starting to Show Off
The gardens are beginning to wake up in a big way. Beds of pink tulips were glowing in the sunlight, bright yellow varieties stood tall against rich green leaves, and soft peach and coral tones created some of the prettiest combinations.
Some flowers were fully open, others still tightly wrapped and waiting for a few warmer days. I always love that stage. Spring is here, but still unfolding.
Every path seemed to offer another reason to stop and take a photo.
Why I Love Visiting Early in the Season
There is something peaceful about visiting gardens before peak bloom. The crowds are lighter, the air feels fresh, and every burst of color stands out even more.
You notice details that can be missed later in the season — perfect petals, single stems reaching upward, subtle shades of pink and cream, and that sense that everything is just getting started.
Turning These Photos Into Something Tangible
One of the things I’m especially excited about right now is beginning to turn some of my favorite images into greeting cards and art cards available on my website. I used to make cards all the time, but got out of the habit and I am loving making them again.
So many of these moments deserve more than living on a hard drive or disappearing in a social media scroll.
A tulip photographed on a cold spring morning.
A shoreline scene from Lake Michigan.
A quiet path lined with blooms.
These images can become something you hold, frame, send to someone you care about, or keep on your desk as a reminder of beauty and seasonality.
That part feels meaningful to me.
Why Cards Still Matter
In a world of fast texts and quick messages, there is still something special about receiving a handwritten note.
A real card slows things down. It feels thoughtful. Personal. Memorable.
If I can pair that with original photography from places I love exploring, even better.
A Good Reminder
Trips like this always remind me how much beauty can be found by simply deciding to go.
No perfect weather.
No huge plan.
Just a drive, a camera, some sunshine, and the willingness to get out the door.
Sometimes that is enough to reset your whole mindset.
If You’d Like to Support My Work
I’ll be adding new cards and prints to my website featuring tulips, gardens, landscapes, and scenes from my Midwest adventures.
Each one starts with a real moment like this.
A chilly day.
A little sunshine.
And spring showing up right on time.
Final Thought
Even with the cold air, the gardens felt alive.
Spring doesn’t always arrive loudly. Sometimes it comes quietly — one tulip bed, one sunny path, one photo at a time.
